Boot Camp 6 update not working after Windows 10 update

I updated to Windows 10 from Windows 8.1 Pro. Using a Mid-2015 Macbook Pro 15" Retina.

I followed the steps on Apple's Support page, and everything goes fine until the last step -- Using Apple Software Update to upgrade to Boot Camp 6.

The file downloads OK, but then it hangs during the installation:

Do I have to install it from a USB drive or something? I saw some other threads with similar issues, but I'm not sure if this is the same problem.

Was a Windows Update run prior to the Apple Software Update? Be careful with WHQL drivers being pushed to your Mac.

No, I didn't run Windows Update after starting the upgrade process, but I ran it this morning before I started upgrading anything.

Can you check if your problem is the same as Solution for Bootcamp 6 error on Windows 10 ?

Yes, that seems to have worked. I had the same problem with the Realtek drivers as the other poster, but I deleted them as recommended and then it ran just fine.

Please check Device Manager for any unknown devices (yellow triangle with exclamation mark). If you do not have any, backup OS X, Windows and create a Windows System Restore point.

Dammit.... Something happened and now I can't boot into Windows at all... It just hangs forever on the black/grey screen you get right after pushing power. It gets hotter and hotter until all I can do is hold down the power key to shut it down.

I can still boot into OS X. And I did create a restore point. But how can I restore if I can't boot into Windows? Windows no longer has the press-F8 to boot into Safe Mode any more...
